How to fix Error 6A81 on Canon printers

Error 6A81 appears on Canon printers like Pixma IP4800, MG5140, MG5150, MX882...

Solution 1: This is a purge unit error.

• There maybe something jamming the purge unit or just a absorber out of place which is picking up on the carriage preventing it from moving correctly. 
• Try to move the carriage away from the purge (its where the printhead/carriage parks its self on the right side of the machine) with no resistance then you can shine a torch into the machine and look at the purge unit. 
• There maybe crumpled paper jammed in the purge. 
• If all looks well, the purge unit may be defective and had to be replaced. 

Solution 2:

• The wiper on the purge may have stuck. It slides back and forth and they have been known to stick. 
• Push it with a long screwdriver to see if it moves.

Solution 3:

• Something is blocking the printer inside. It could be a paper jam or a foreign object. 
• Check using a flashlight, to ensure there is nothing obstructing the paper feed mechanism down inside the printer where it is not easily seen.
• If there is nothing obvious, unplug the printer power supply. 

Solution 3a ( thanks to Peter van eijden for the tip):

• Printer off. 
• Bring by hand the ink-carrier to the right side.
• Push down carefully on the carrier, hold on and shalter the printer: push the left site of the carrier down, because its will come up.

Solution 4:

• Take a dry cloth and clean the rubber rollers in the automatic sheet feeder. Dust may be coating the rollers there and as they become less tacky, they cannot feed paper correctly.

Solution 5:

• Hold the printer in both hands (you may need another person to help you), turn it upside down and shake it for a few seconds to see if anything falls out of the paper feed area. (Sometimes objects such as pens, paper clips and so on can fall into the paper feed area and cause blockages.)
• Then plug the printer back up, take your paper out and replace it with a fresh, small stack (about 5 pages) of paper. Then try to form feed again. If that works, then try to print again.

How to fix Error 46 on Brother printers

To fix error 46 you have to reset the purge counter.


Solution:

• Enter machine maintenance mode (on MFC210C all four photo/copy/fax/scan lights flash in maintenance mode).
• FAX models with numerical keypads: Press the Menu/Set, *, 2, 8, 6 and 4 keys within two seconds. (if you fail to complete the correct key sequence within two seconds, press the Stop key to try again).
• Other (non-FAX) models: Press the Menu/Set and Black Start keys. Next press the “up arrow” key four times to enter the maintenance mode).

• Press the Stop/Exit key to return to the initial stage of the maintenance mode.
• Press the 9 key twice to return to the standby state.

Solution 1:

• Press and hold the “*” key.
• Press the “#” key and release both keys.
• Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
• Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
• Screen says "support" R0631M
• Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
• Press and release the “OK” button.
• Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
• Press and release the “OK” button.
• Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
• Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
• Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
• Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
• Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
• Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”.
• Press OK. The Printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.

Solution 2:

• Press * and # at the same time 
• Press 1, 2, 3 and "support R0632M" should display
• Press > and "information menu" should display
• Press > and "configuration menu" should display
• Press OK and "hardware failure status" should display
• Press OK "failure status: clear". Press OK to clear
• Press CANCEL
• Press CANCEL
• Press CANCEL
• Turn printer off, unplug power cord for 2 minutes, plug cord back in then turn printer back on.

• If the error came back, do the sequence again and the error will be replaced with the usual print cartridge initialization screens. Print a test page to make sure.

Solution 3 (thanks to a1224imac):

• This same error started occurring on my printer and eventually it would constantly power on and off. 
• Apparently some defective components were used in the construction of the logic board (see photo). 
• On my C6180 there were 3 failed capacitors (the green cylinders - the puffed top indicates failure) and a 4th from the same manufacturer (TEAPO - many unfavorable web references to this manufacturer). 
• I purchased 3x 330uF 16V and 1x 680uF 10v rated to 105 degrees Celsius (total about 60cents). 
• On the logic board, the capacitors I replaced are labeled C613, C614, C660 and C662. 
• If you are not comfortable replacing the parts yourself (or don't have a soldering tool), you will have to find someone who will. The time to repair should be less than 30 min - I did it in 25 min with only a solder pen. This also fixed the ink system failures the printer was having. A similar fix may apply to other printers.

This tutorial is for creating a Live CD/DVD based on Ubuntu 12.04. You can also try latest version of Ubuntu Live CD/DVD by using the following instructions.

Step 1
Install Ubuntu 12.04 in a PC or inside a Virtual Box application.
Upgrade the system by installing latest packages, apply the following commands,

sudo su
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Install the additional applications (e.g. Gimp) for your Live CD/DVD.

Step 2
You can remove following packages to reduce the size of final ISO file.
 apt-get remove libreoffice-help-en-us ubuntu-docs thunderbird smbclient rhythmbox totem deja-dup gnome-orca transmission-gtk

Remove games,

sudo apt-get purge aisleriot gnome-sudoku mahjongg ace-of-penguins gnomine gbrainy


Remove the unnecessary packages deposited in cache using Bleachbit. Otherwise the size of Live DVD will be heavy. Bleachbit can remove lot of junk files and save space. Install Bleachbit using the following command,

apt-get install bleachbit

Open Bleachbit from Applications > System Tools

To use Bleachbit, see the documentation here.

Few more tips too make your Live DVD good,

Disable Apport to prevent unwanted system messages.

Open following file and fine the entry enabled=1 change to enabled=0.

sudo gedit /etc/default/apport

You can change boot splash to text mode. Open following file

gedit /etc/default/grub
 
and find following line,

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Remove the entry "quite splash", save file and close.


Step 3
Installation of Remastersys in Ubuntu 12.04. Apply the following commands.

sudo su
wget -O - http://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu/remastersys.gpg.key | apt-key add -

gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following lines in the file, save and close.

#Remastersys Precise
deb http://www.remastersys.com/ubuntu precise main

Update the package repository and install Remastersys

apt-get update
apt-get install remastersys remastersys-gtk

Remastersys will appear in Applications > System Tools > Administration

• Wait 30 seconds.
• Plug in the power cable to All-in-One and also to wall outlet.
• Check for the functionality.

Solution 3:

• Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on and wait for 20 seconds.
• Then, press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord.
• Continue holding until it displays Semi Full Reset message in the front panel of the All-in-One

If the strip gets a piece of crud on it, you get an error during the start-up sequence.Gently clean this strip with a damp lint-free tissue.
